This is a great option for me who cannot tolerate oral finasteride due to sexual side effects. Thismedication is designed for men and some post-menopausal women. Women of childbearing age should NOT take this medication, as well as avoid contact of a man’s scalp 3 hours after application.

Formula 82M is a pharmacy-compounded minoxidil-based solution that has been in development for over 15 years and was introduced to the medical community in 2010. This prescription-only 82M formula can be used in both men and women and can provide greater efficacy than standard minoxidil formulations. In comparison with plain minoxidil, the formula 82M has been found to be easier to use, less irritating, and with improved efficacy for both male and female hair loss.

This novel formulation is designed to strengthen hair follicles and to provide a very soft and natural texture. 82S helps to reduce hair loss with natural extracts, including saw palmetto, that actively reduces DHT along with eco-certified agents, amino acids, and vitamins. This product works well with formulations 82M and 82F. Performance has been validated by scientific studies, and the formula is sulfate, paraben, and sodium chloride free.

Propecia, or its generic form of Finasteride, is the most widely accepted oral medication to prevent hair loss. It blocks the body’s naturalconversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) via an enzyme 5-alpha-reductase Type 2. This medication is not appropriate for women of childbearing age, as it can adversely impact fetal development. Sexual side effects are seen in a very small percentage of patients and these concerns will be addressed by Dr. Saltzburg in your consult.

Dutasteride, similar to Finasteride, is a medication that hasn’t been approved by the FDA yet specifically for hair loss, although many hair transplant surgeons prescribe it. It has a greater efficacy than Finasteride in blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT (95% vs. 65%) and thus slows down hair loss at a greater rate. This option can be discussed with Dr. Saltzburg during your consultation.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical medication that helps with hair growth and slows down hair loss. It is acceptable to be used in both men and women and comes packaged in 2% (women) and 5% (men but now approved for women too). The5% formulation is sold as either a liquid or a foam: both forms have the same efficacy. However, the liquid has a 22% chance of an allergic reaction due to the presence of propylene glycol; whereas the foam has about a 2% chance of allergy. It is important that the product be placed onto the scalp and no showering or water exposure should be undertaken for 4 hours. Oftentimes hair-growth results can be observed as early as 3 to 4 months after starting.
